How to recover the lost desktop shortcuts?

I have a Dell Studio XPS 9000 desktop computer running Windows 7. I got it few weeks ago through an online deal. Everything is working pretty fine except desktop shortcuts. Last night I was working on my computer and suddenly all desktop shortcuts mysteriously disappeared. I have limited computer knowledge, so can't figure out the reason behind this problem. Does anyone know how to recover the lost desktop shortcuts?

Any help will be appreciated.

Try what that article suggests. Apparently if you have more then 4 shortcuts they get automatically deleted.
